Now think about other manufacturing industries that have highly automated production plants. For most other types of manufacturers, a production run is equal to millions of identical items.

When they change the product, they have to retool and adjust all the automation equipment to produce a different product, a process that can take weeks in some industries. Once done, they will produce millions of identical products with the new specifications.
It’s a major effort to retool a plant to produce a different or changed product. Now imagine trying to do that in the industrial packaging industry.
In a highly automated production plant, all the equipment would have to be adjusted and retooled for each customer’s product. On top of that, manufacturers don’t generally buy millions of pallets or crates at one time. They purchase them throughout the year, as they manufacture and ship out their own products.
Those two factors combined mean that wood packaging manufacturers, using that type of technology, would be retooling automation systems and reprogramming robotics several times each day.
There are three types of pallets: stringers, block, and board. Stringer pallets have two or more parallel slats that support a load. Block pallets have multiple boards perpendicular to the stringers. Board pallets have only a top deck, no bottom deck. All three types can be made of either wood or plastic.
Wooden pallets are the most common type of pallet. They're cheap and easy to make, but they're also heavy and can splinter. Plastic pallets are lighter, don't splinter, and are easier to clean, but they're more expensive.
Most wooden pallets are made from either hardwoods or softwoods. The type of wood used depends on the intended use of the pallet. Hardwoods, like oak, are better for heavy loads, while softwoods, like pine, are better for lighter loads.
To make a wooden pallet, boards are cut to size and then nailed or screwed together. The boards are placed either perpendicular to the stringers (for a block pallet) or parallel to the stringers (for a stringer pallet). Once the boards are in place, cross bracing is added for strength.
Plastic pallets are made from either recycled plastic or virgin plastic. Recycled plastic pallets are stronger, but virgin plastic pallets are more expensive. To make a plastic pallet, the plastic is melted and then injected into a mold. The mold determines the shape of the pallet.
Once the pallet is cooled, it's ejected from the mold and then trimmed of any excess plastic. Finally, holes are drilled into the pallet for attaching load-bearing hardware, like nails or screws.
There are many benefits to using pallets. They're strong, durable, and easy to store. Plus, they can be reused or recycled. Whether you choose a wooden or plastic pallet, make sure it's the right type for your needs.
